Home remedies for damaged hair are the easiest and most affordable way to repair your damaged hair. Learn how you can use olive oil, lemon juice, eggs, almond oil + rosemary among other products you can use.
For most women, hair is an important beauty mark, but it can get mechanical and chemical damage due to reasons such as over-shampooing, bleaching, perming, coloring, blowdrying, pony-tailing (especially when pulled too tight) and excess brushing.
As a result, it could feel rough and dry and have a dull look. Worse still, it could have breakages and split ends. Here is a list of effective and easy to use home remedies that will get it looking healthy and beautiful.
1. Using olive oil
Olive oil is a classic home remedy with its use extending back to the Ancient Greece era. Olive oil contains antioxidants and vitamin E and washes out easily. It not only nourishes your hair but also protects it from humidity and sunlight while getting rid of the static.
Most importantly, it coats the hair cuticle and flattens the overlapping scales, giving it a shiny and healthy look. But should you experience any skin irritation or rash, discontinue using the olive oil right away.
Method to Use:
Pour some olive oil into your palm, rub gently between your hands, and then apply it to your hair. Once you have applied some generous amount, cover it with a shower cap for half an hour before shampooing. You should consider doing this if your hair strands are dry and split and every time you shampoo it.
2. Try Lemon juice to repair it
Freshly squeezed lemon juice also ranks well among remedies or home fixes. Lemon juice is great for flaky scalps and entangled hair. It also gets rid of the itch typical for infested with dandruff, lice, and bacteria.
Method to Use:
Get some fresh lemons, cut them into two, and squeeze out the juice. Mix the lemon juice with water and apply it to your hair. Once through, rinse it and shampoo it thoroughly. You may as well consider mixing the lemon juice with olive oil and honey.
3. Use eggs
This is yet another commonly used remedy. Applying eggs to your hair provides it with protein which is an essential component of its strand’s cortex, making it smoother and healthier looking. For this remedy, you will require the white part of the egg, so you need to remove the yolk (the yellow part). You may as well consider adding honey, olive oil and coconut oil to your egg.
Method to Use:
Break two or three eggs in a small basin and remove the yolk. Apply the egg to your hair and let it stay for some 10 to 15 minutes before washing it off and finally rinsing it with a shampoo.
4. Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is also very effective in the treatment. Vinegar not only makes your hair get its shine back but also disentangles it. Vinegar works by removing the residues built-up in its shafts and by getting the cuticles sealed.
Rinsing it with vinegar is also effective in removing iron deposits that collect on it turning it reddish, especially among people who use water drawn from some wells.
The characteristic tonic action of vinegar also helps to enhance the circulation of blood in the capillaries serving the skin leading to better replenishment of the hair. Apple cider is preferred to white vinegar as it is milder and while it has a rather stronger smell, this should be the least of your worries as it goes away as it dries off.
It deserves to be mentioned however that excessive use of vinegar can weaken the hair strands, so this method should be used only occasionally. And if irritation results from the use of vinegar, you should discontinue.
Method to Use:
Add a third-full cup of vinegar and add it to a quarter-full cup of water. Once ready, shampoo it thoroughly and finish by rinsing it with the vinegar.
5. Coconut oil home remedy
Coconut oil is yet another useful remedy. Like olive oil, coconut oil also contains antioxidants that help to seal the hair shaft cuticles, leaving it smooth, shiny and healthy-looking.
Method to Use:
Apply some coconut oil into your hair and leave it for between 10 and 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. If you like, you can as well mix the coconut oil with honey.
6. Almond Oil
Almond oil is not only ideal for treating damaged hair but is also good for keeping it healthy.
Method to Use:
Apply some almond oil to your palm and massage it into the hair with your fingers. Now cover it with a towel for 20 minutes to keep in the moisture. Finally, wash the almond oil off and finish by shampooing and conditioning it.
For better results, you should consider adding 2 tablespoonfuls of apple cider vinegar to the water when washing off the almond oil.
7. Rosemary and olive oil
Rosemary has for a long time been recognized as an effective stimulator of hair growth. Rosemary also has some antioxidant properties that protect cells against damage. As a remedy for damaged hair, rosemary works best when mixed with olive oil.
Method to Use:
Take a quarter cup of olive oil and warm (not heat) gently in a pan. Don’t let it burn or shimmer. Once done, pour it into a small bottle and add about five drops of rosemary essential oil. Now apply the oil mixture to your hair and scalp and cover it with a shower cap for about 20 minutes.
Finally, use shampoo to wash the oil-mixture off. You can repeat this on a weekly basis to get the desired results. The oil-mixture can be used for one month but it should be store away from direct sunlight.
These are all effective home remedies that you should consider before taking the scissors to chop off that precious hair that has taken you months if not years to grow. They will not only get it looking shiny and smooth but also make it stronger to avoid breakage and split ends.
